Title: Fun With Calculus

Goals:
1. Review the basic principles of calculus
2. Apply principles of calculus to solve a problem
Objectives:
Demonstrate the uses of calculus in real-life situations.
Materials:
Instruction packet with problem
Pop can (full)
Ramp
Stopwatch
Activity Time: 90 minutes
Procedure:
1. Review calculus basics with class
2. Divide class into groups of three
3. Explain activity/handout packet
4. Give each group twenty minutes to brainstorm ideas on how to solve
the problem
5. Have group begin experimenting
6. Ask group to come up with final answer
7. Have each group present their work to the class
Closure:
Sum up the various techniques each group used to solve the problem. Have
class brainstorm in what other ways calculus can be used outside of school.
Evaluation:
Have class write in journals about how they felt about the work they did
in class today--did the group work well together, were they able to solve
the problem, what mishaps did they encounter along the way, what might work
better next time, what was learned, etc.
